Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 pound chopped bacon
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- Hamburger Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
- Main Ingredients (continued)
- 12 ounces Velveeta, cubed
- 1 (13.8 ounce) thin crust pizza dough (Pillsbury recommended)
- 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar jack cheese
- Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F. Take a baking sheet and line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier. The high temperature will ensure a crispy, golden crust.
- Cook the Bacon: In a large skillet over medium-low heat, cook the chopped bacon until it becomes crisp. This should take about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once crispy, remove the bacon from the pan and set it aside. Drain most of the bacon grease from the skillet, leaving just a small amount for flavor.
- Prepare the Filling: Using the same skillet with the remaining bacon grease, add the chopped onions and ground beef. Cook over medium heat until the onions become soft and translucent and the beef is completely cooked through with no pink remaining. This should take about 7-9 minutes. Drain any excess liquid from the pan to avoid a soggy bread.
- Melt the Cheese: Return the skillet to low heat. Add the cooked bacon back to the pan along with the hamburger seasoning (or individual spices) and cubed Velveeta cheese. Stir continuously until the cheese melts completely and all ingredients are well combined, creating a rich, cheesy meat mixture.
- Assemble the Bread: Roll out the pizza dough on the prepared baking sheet, forming a rectangle. Evenly spread the meat and cheese mixture over the dough, leaving about an inch of space at all edges. This border will help seal the bread when rolled. Sprinkle the grated cheddar jack cheese evenly over the meat mixture.
- Roll and Bake: Carefully roll up the dough from the long side, similar to making a jelly roll. Pinch the edges and seams to seal the bread completely. Place the rolled bread seam-side down on the baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust becomes golden brown and crispy.
- Prepare the Sauce: While the bread is baking, prepare the dipping sauce by whisking together mayonnaise, ketchup, salt, and pepper in a small bowl until smooth and well combined. Adjust seasoning to taste.
- Serve: Allow the garbage bread to cool for about 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with the prepared dipping sauce on the side.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add diced jalapeños or increase the cayenne pepper in the seasoning mix.
- You can substitute the Velveeta with cream cheese or another melting cheese if preferred.
- This bread can be made ahead and refrigerated before baking. If baking from refrigerated, add 5-10 minutes to the baking time.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes.
- You can customize the filling with additional ingredients like mushrooms, bell peppers, or pepperoni for variety.
