  • Author: Eliana
  • Total Time: 1 hour 3 minutes
  • Yield: 15 servings 1x

Description

This show-stopping Oreo Dirt Pie takes the classic dirt cake concept to a whole new level of deliciousness! Built on a foundation of moist chocolate fudge cake, this indulgent dessert features layers of hot fudge, rich chocolate pudding, and a creamy “dirt” topping made from crushed Oreos mixed with Cool Whip and pudding

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake Base:

  • 1 box chocolate fudge cake mix
  • Ingredients called for on the cake mix box (typically eggs, water, and oil)

For the Hot Fudge Layer:

  • 1 jar (12.8 oz) hot fudge sauce, divided

For the First Pudding Layer:

  • 1 box (3.4 oz) Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix
  • 1¾ cups cold milk

For the “Dirt” Topping:

  • 1 box (3.4 oz) Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix
  • 1¾ cups cold milk
  • 1 container (8 oz) Cool Whip, thawed
  • 1 package (14.3 oz) Oreo cookies, divided

For Garnish:

  • Remaining hot fudge sauce
  • Remaining Oreo cookies, coarsely crushed

Instructions

  • Prepare and Bake the Cake
    • Preheat your oven according to the cake mix package directions (typically 350°F)
    • Grease or line a 9×13-inch baking pan
    • In a large bowl, prepare the chocolate fudge cake mix according to the package instructions
    • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan
    • Bake for 22-28 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean
    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes
  • Create Holes and Add Hot Fudge
    • While the cake is still warm, use the end of a wooden spoon or another round object to poke holes all over the top of the cake
    • Reserve about 3 tablespoons of hot fudge sauce for the final topping
    • Heat the remaining hot fudge sauce in the microwave for 30-60 seconds until it’s thin enough to pour
    • Pour the warm hot fudge sauce evenly over the cake, allowing it to seep into the holes
    • Let the cake cool completely, giving the fudge time to absorb into the cake
  • Add the First Pudding Layer
    • In a bowl, whisk together one package of instant dark chocolate pudding mix with 1¾ cups cold milk for about 2 minutes
    • While the pudding is still liquid (before it sets), pour it evenly over the cooled cake
    • Place the cake in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes to allow the pudding to set
  • Prepare the Second Pudding Layer
    • In another bowl, whisk together the second package of instant dark chocolate pudding mix with 1¾ cups cold milk for about 2 minutes
    • Refrigerate this pudding mixture until it has fully set, about 5 minutes
    • Keep the cake in the refrigerator while the second pudding sets
  • Create the “Dirt” Topping
    • Place about ¾ of the Oreo cookies (approximately 25-30 cookies) in a large ziplock bag
    • Crush the cookies into small pieces using a rolling pin or other heavy object
    • Remove the set pudding from the refrigerator
    • Fold the thawed Cool Whip into the set pudding until well combined
    • Gently fold in the crushed Oreos until evenly distributed throughout the mixture
  • Assemble and Finish
    • Spread the “dirt” mixture (Oreo-pudding-Cool Whip) evenly over the top of the cake
    • Warm the reserved hot fudge sauce in the microwave for 15-20 seconds until slightly runny
    • Drizzle the warm hot fudge sauce over the top of the “dirt” layer
    • Crush the remaining Oreos into coarser pieces and sprinkle them over the top

  • Chill and Serve
    • Refrigerate the completed Oreo Dirt Pie for at least 2 hours before serving
    • Keep refrigerated until ready to serve
    • Cut into squares and serve cold
    • Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 28 minutes
