Cinnamon Roll French Toast Roll-Ups

  • Author: Eliana
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 10 roll-ups (serves 3-4) 1x

Description

Crispy on the outside, gooey and sweet on the inside, these French toast roll-ups transform ordinary bread into a delicious handheld breakfast treat with all the flavors of a cinnamon roll.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Roll-Ups:

10 slices white sandwich bread

3 tablespoons butter, melted

3 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

For the French Toast Coating:

3 large eggs

1 tablespoon milk

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

For Cooking:

23 tablespoons butter for frying

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Remove crusts from all bread slices. Using a rolling pin, gently flatten each slice to make it more pliable. This makes the bread thinner and easier to roll without breaking.

Make the Cinnamon Filling: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon until well mixed. This creates the sweet, gooey filling that mimics the flavors of traditional cinnamon rolls.

Apply the Filling: Spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly across each flattened bread slice, making sure to leave a small border around the edges. This border helps seal the roll-ups when you’re finishing them.

Roll the Bread: Starting from one edge, tightly roll up each bread slice into a cylinder shape. Gently press the seam and edges to seal the roll-up and prevent the filling from leaking during cooking.

Prepare the French Toast Coating: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and vanilla extract until well combined. This mixture will give the roll-ups their classic French toast flavor and golden exterior.

Heat the Pan: Place a skillet over medium heat and add the butter for frying. Allow the butter to melt and begin to bubble slightly before adding the roll-ups.

Coat and Cook: Dip each roll-up in the egg mixture, ensuring it’s coated on all sides. Place them in the hot skillet seam-side down first to secure the seal. Cook for 2-3 minutes total, rotating occasionally to ensure all sides get golden brown and crispy.

Notes

Use slightly stale bread for best results as it holds its shape better during cooking.

These roll-ups can be served with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or cream cheese glaze for extra indulgence.

Try adding finely chopped nuts or raisins to the filling for added texture and flavor.

To make ahead, prepare the roll-ups up to the cooking stage and refrigerate overnight, then coat and cook in the morning.
