Ingredients
Scale
- 3 ripe avocados
- 1 small red onion, finely diced
- 1–2 jalapeños, finely chopped (seeded for less heat)
- 2 small Roma tomatoes, finely diced
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Juice of 1 lime (about 2 tablespoons)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Avocados: Cut the avocados in half lengthwise, running your knife around the pit. Twist the halves to separate them. Remove the pits by carefully striking them with the blade of your knife and twisting to release. Use a spoon to scoop the flesh into a medium bowl, being careful to get all the creamy green flesh without any of the peel.
- Mash the Avocados: Using a fork, mash the avocados to your preferred consistency. For a more rustic guacamole, leave it somewhat chunky with visible pieces of avocado. For a smoother dip, continue mashing until you reach a more uniform texture. The perfect guacamole usually has some textural variation rather than being completely smooth.
- Add the Mix-Ins: Add the finely diced red onion, chopped jalapeños, diced Roma tomatoes, fresh cilantro, minced garlic, lime juice, salt, and cumin (if using) to the mashed avocados. Gently fold all ingredients together using a spatula or large spoon, being careful not to over-mix, which can make the guacamole too mushy.
- Taste and Adjust: Sample your guacamole and make any necessary adjustments to the seasoning. Add more lime juice for brightness, salt for flavor enhancement, or jalapeño for additional heat according to your preference. Remember that flavors will meld and develop slightly as the guacamole sits.
- Serve: Transfer the guacamole to a serving bowl. Serve immediately with tortilla chips for dipping, or use as a topping for tacos, nachos, burgers, or Mexican-inspired salads. If not serving right away, see notes on storage to prevent browning.
Notes
- To keep guacamole from browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole before refrigerating, or leave one avocado pit in the mixture.
- For the ripest avocados, look for fruits that yield slightly to gentle pressure but aren’t mushy.
- Adding the lime juice not only enhances flavor but also helps prevent oxidation.
- Guacamole is best enjoyed fresh, as the flavors and textures are at their peak immediately after preparation.
- For a twist, try adding diced mango, pineapple, or corn for sweetness and texture variation.
