Hearty, rustic, and full of homestyle flavor, this Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is the ultimate comfort food dish! Layers of tender potatoes, savory beef patties, creamy homemade gravy, and melty cheddar cheese come together in one cozy casserole that’s sure to warm you up from the inside out.

This recipe is perfect for family dinners, gatherings, or anytime you need a simple, satisfying meal that’s easy to prepare and delivers big on flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 2 cups milk, divided

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • 45 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

1. Preheat & Prep

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.

2. Season & Shape the Beef

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form the beef into 6 patties.

3. Brown the Patties

In a skillet over medium heat, brown the patties on both sides. Do not fully cook through—they will finish cooking in the oven. Set the patties aside.

4. Make the Gravy

Using the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and the flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in the remaining 1 cup of milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

5. Assemble the Bake

  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of your prepared baking dish.

  • Add half of the sliced onions over the potatoes.

  • Arrange the browned hamburger patties over the onions.

  • Top with the remaining potatoes and onions.

  • Pour the creamy gravy evenly over the entire dish.

6. Bake

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. This allows the potatoes to become tender and the flavors to meld beautifully.

7. Add the Cheesy Finish

Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top, and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and melted.

8. Serve & Enjoy!

Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Pair with a crisp green salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
